Friends in the Desert

- Unknown Author

Two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:

"Today my best friend slapped me in the face."

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone:

"Today my best friend saved my life."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The friend replied, when someone hurts us we should write it down in sand, where the winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Footsteps

Unknown Author

Deep in his slumber, one night a man had a very real, yet surreal dream. He dreamt that he was walking along the beach with God. As he looked up at the sky, he saw all the scenes of his life flash by along with two sets of footprints: one set for himself, and another for God.

After all the scenes had flashed before him, he looked back at those footprints and noticed something quite disturbing: At the most difficult times in his life, he saw only one set of footprints.

This deeply troubled the man, so he turned and said to God: "You said that if I followed you, then you would always walk with me through thick and thin. In looking back, I see that during the most painful times there is only one set of footprints. Why did you leave me when I needed you the most?"

"I love you and would never leave. It was during those times when you suffered the most that I carried you."

Though this was originally a religious parable, it is also one of great spiritual depth even for the non-religious. One need only replace "God" with any word they use, be it "Allah," "Universal Connectedness," "Consciousness," "Higher Self," or others, to see that we are not alone, and that there is an energy that is always looking out for the best interests of our spiritual evolution.

Drowning Man

-Unknown Author

While out to sea, a large boat became shipwrecked and there was only a single survivor. This man prayed and asked God to save his life. Soon thereafter, another boat came by and offered the man some help.

"No thanks," he said. "I'm waiting for God to save me."

The men on the boat shrugged their shoulders and continued. As the man became more deeply concerned, another boat came by. Again, the people aboard offered this man some help, and again he politely decline. "I'm waiting for God to save me," he said again.

After some time, the man began to lose his faith, and soon after that he died. Upon reaching Heaven, he had a chance to speak with God briefly.

"Why did you let me die? Why didn't you answer my prayers?"

"Dummy, I sent you two boats!"

The Universe is always watching out for the best interests of our spiritual evolution, even when we are too narrowly focused to see all the other opportunities it presents us. Sometimes, all that is needed is a change of perspective

>>> Becoming One With Him >>>

Seeing Sai in the world means being with Him all the time and offering everything to him. By always asking, "Is this what Swami wants?" he becomes a constant companion and closest friend.

To accomplish this closeness, our efforts must be intense, sincere, and steady even through adversity. Dr. Hislop once asked Swami, "Why, after many years of sadhna (Spiritual discipline) have I not yet attained self-realization?

Swami answered with one word, "Intensity".

Sai Baba spoke about an unusual incident that happened about one hundred years ago in India. It illustrates the fact that all consuming closeness with God can actually make us one with Him. This closeness is achieved when we offer everything to God with no other thought and with renunciation of all attachments. It also cautions us that the path can be trying.

Swami then spoke of a poor woman who took to the task of cleaning her humble abode in a disciplined manner everyday. She would sweep the floor of her house with a dung ball, which had antiseptic properties. When she was finished, she took the remaining ball of dung in her hand and threw it out of the back door with a prayer on her lips, offering it to Lord Krishna with all love.

She thanked Him for giving her strength to clean her house, for the cleanliness in her house, and for the means by which she could clean her house.

At the same time that the woman offered the dung ball to Krishna in this manner, a strange event occurred in the temple in the middle of the town. In this temple, there was a small statue of Krishna hanging on the wall. The priest was amazed to see that each day at the same time, out of thin air, a dung ball mysteriously flew through the air and splattered all over the statue of Krishna.

The priest was incensed by such an occurrence and could not understand from where the dung ball came. Thinking that someone in the village must be behind this incident, he searched the village night and day for the culprit.

He heard of a woman living nearby who threw a dung ball out of the back door of her home at the same moment the dung splattered on the Krishna statue.

The priest hid behind tree and watched the woman's home for few days. Sure enough, each day he saw her sweep her home with the dung ball and throw it out of her back door into the yard. He concluded that she must be the culprit.

Infuriated, he picked up a stick, jumped over the fence of the yard, and fell upon the woman, beating her badly. The woman's arm was broken and bleeding and she wept in pain. The priest satisfied that he had protected Krishna, proudly walked back to the temple.

He was sure that the statue would be clean this day. However, to his surprise, the arm of Lord Krishna had been broken and appeared to be bleeding. This was in reciprocation to the brutal treatment of the woman by the priest. Her selfless and holy offering to Krishna made her one with Him. Not understanding this, the priest has actually attacked his Lord. Aware of the fact and repenting for his brutal behaviour, the priest fell at the statue's feet and prayed for forgiveness. He learned that any offering done with a pure heart reached the Lord and the selfless act ultimately result in merging the two thereby abolishing duality. He also learned that God resides in the hearts of all.

>>> Dragonfly >>>

Dragonfly

Spiritual Story by Unknown

Once, in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads, there lived a little water beetle in a community of water beetles. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances and interruptions.

Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow beetles would climb the stem of a lily pad and would never be seen again. They knew when this happened; their friend was dead, gone forever.

Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge to climb up that stem. However, he was determined that he would not leave forever. He would come back and tell his friends what he had found at the top.

When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided he must take a nap. As he slept, his body changed and when he woke up, he had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying.

So, fly he did! And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never known existed.

Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking by now he was dead. He wanted to go back to tell them, and explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been before. His life had been fulfilled rather than ended.

But, his new body would not go down into the water. He could not get back to tell his friends the good news. Then he understood that their time would come, when they, too, would know what he now knew.

So, he raised his wings and flew off into his joyous new life!

A man was about the cross a river, when master
Bibhishana came over, wrote a name on a leaf, tied it to the man's back, and said:
"Don't be afraid. Your faith will help you walk on the waters. But the minute you lose faith, you will drown."

The man trusted Bibhishana, and began to walk on the waters, without any difficulty. At a certain point, he had an overwhelming desire to know what his master had written on the leaf tied to his back.
He took it and read what was written:
"Oh god Rama, help this man to cross the river."

"Is that all?" thought the man. "And who is this god Rama, anyway?"
The moment this doubt became lodged in his mind, he was submerged and drowned in the strong current

>>> Perseverance In The Path Of Spirituality >>>

This is a story narrated by Swami Vivekananda emphasizing the role of perseverance in God realization. Sage Narada was a great yogi who did a lot of travelling. One day in the course of his travel he came upon a man who was performing severe penance in the form of meditation without altering his position. This resulted in the formation of an anthill around him. He was meditating with a view to attain realization, which is the ultimate end of the spiritual journey. On seeing Narada he asked him to enquire with God as to when he would be enlightened.
Further down the course of his travel Sage Narada met another person who was of a wild disposition. He too asked Narada to ask God when he will attain the ultimate end in spirituality. Later when Narada came by the same way where he met the two of them, he told the man who was engaged in deep meditation that he still has four more births to attain realization. Upon hearing this, the man wept and wailed, as he had to encounter with four more births.
The other man was informed by Narada who pointed out to a nearby tamarind tree and told that he has to take that many births as the count of the leaves in the tree. The wild man reacted jubilantly and positively said that he only has to wait for a short time. Immediately a voice from Heaven said that he would attain God realization that very moment itself.

Hence the moral of the story as told by Swami Vivekananda is that perseverance speeds up the course of realization. Ideals and methods of religions, rituals and hearing religious talks and reading religious books can be but only of a little help.

An undying spirit of perseverance, an untiring effort in the spiritual path, which would mean the readiness to wait for an infinite length of time, would surely result in Realization.

PILES / HEMORRHOIDS
Piles or haemorrhoids is one of the most common ailments today. It is a varicose and often inflamed condition of the veins, inside or just outside the rectum. In external piles, there is a lot of pain but not much bleeding. In the case of internal piles, there is discharge of dark blood. In some cases the veins burst and this results in what is known as bleeding piles.

A decoction of the herb prepared by boiling six 10 seven dry fruits in half a litre of water should be used for washing bleeding piles. The paste of the fruit mixed in a bland oil is good as an external application.

Piles diet

Fruit diet

The treatment of the basic cause, namely, chronic constipation, is the only way to get rid of the trouble. To begin with, the entire digestive tract must be given a complete rest for a few days and the intestines thoroughly cleansed. For this purpose, the patient should adopt an all-fruit diet for, at least, seven days. Thereafter he may adopt a diet of natural foods aimed at securing soft stools.

A Resourceful Householder

A MAN called Krishna and his wife were living alone in a house. One evening, as the couple were sitting in the hall, the husband descried a well-known ex-convict of most desperate character hiding in the loft. To shout out would mean certain escape of the marauder and possibly also some hurt at his hands before help could come. Not to shout out would mean robbery at night accompanied with violence.

At last, a brilliant idea struck the husband. There was a sturdy neighbour called Rama who had caught many thieves before. The husband told his wife, 'My dear, you are pregnant now. You will deliver a child soon. If it turns out to be a male, as I expect it will be, I shall name it Rama, and at the age of five I shall send it to school. I shall insist that it should come home every day at 5.30 p.m. precisely.'

'What if he does not come at that time?' asked the wife. 'I shall shout out, "Rama, Rama,"' replied the husband shouting out 'Rama' in a loud voice.

'What if he does not come still?' asked the wife. 'I shall shout out again, "Rama," "Rama," "Rama," "Rama," "Rama" till he comes,' replied the husband shouting out the name, 'Rama' at the top of his voice.

The neighbour Rama and others came rushing to the house hearing the shouts and enquired of the husband as to what the matter was. 'Somebody in the loft wants you,' replied the husband pointing to the ex-convict who was speedily secured, put up for trial before a court and sentenced to serve a long term.
The ex-convict swore vengeance on the resourceful man who had brought about his arrest. One day, shortly after his release, he hid himself in the rubbish pit outside the house in order to escape all chances of detection. When Krishna went to rinse his mouth after meals at the rubbish heap as usual, he perceived a slight movement in the rubbish heap as the water fell on it. His suspicions were fully roused.

He asked his wife to bring pot after pot of water and continued to rinse his mouth and eject the water on the rubbish heap where the ex-convict was concealed. The ex-convict, determined not to be found out this time, kept absolutely motionless in spite of the shower bath he was receiving. But Krishna's wife, not knowing the reason for her husband's strange action asked him, 'Has your mouth turned a gutter that you rinse it so many times? I cannot bring any more water.' On which, Krishna spat one mouthful of water on her. The poor woman raised a loud hue and cry fully believing that her husband had gone mad.

Rama and all other neighbours came running and enquired of Krishna as to what the matter was. 'This wretched woman,' said Krishna, 'whom I feed and clothe raised all this alarm because I spat at her once whereas this man here (pointing to the concealed robber) whom I never once fed or clothed has patiently borne at least a hundred spittings without one word of murmur.' The assembled villagers at once secured the concealed marauder who was once again put up before a magistrate and this time sentenced to a good long term of hard labour.

>>>Right Food for a Pregnant Woman>>>

Right Food for a Pregnant Woman

Nutritious food is very necessary for a pregnant woman. A pregnant woman requires 80 thousand extra calories in order to give birth to a healthy child because around 300 additional calories are spent everyday during pregnancy, which is equal to the amount of calories present in a glassful of low fat milk, a bread slice, and an apple.

Calcium rich food should be taken during pregnancy. Calcium prevents high blood pressure in a pregnant woman. A woman should drink two to three glasses of low fat milk during pregnancy. She should take it before, during pregnancy and after delivery.

Cook rice or barley in milk instead of water to get sufficient amount of calcium. Eat calcium rich things, as during pregnancy 1000 mg of calcium is required everyday.

The pregnant woman should avoid constipation and therefore she should drink more water, as it is also beneficial for the child growing inside the womb. Drink at least eight glasses of water during the day. Drink water before and after meals. Skimmed milk or fruit juice is also beneficial.

A pregnant woman also requires iron during these days. She should take protein rich food, dry beans, green peas etc. Iron is difficult to add in the food but it is very important. Eat iron rich food as much as possible. Cook vegetables in iron pans and take, iron tablets etc.

Daily routine during pregnancy:

The woman should be careful during pregnancy, as there are chances of miscarriage. She should take regular massage for hands and legs since laborious work is not possible.

A pregnant woman should always be happy and avoid tough work. She should avoid fast walking, lifting weight, standing for long hours, climbing up the stairs, jumping, cycling, dancing, swimming, etc. she can do some light household work.

To beget a healthy child:

The pregnant woman should take two oranges during afternoon from first to eighth month.

·She should take half to one-gram linseed vanshlochan powder at bedtime for the first three to four months once she is tested positive for pregnancy. This helps in begetting a healthy child and also helps her remain strong. It also avoids chances of miscarriage. The lady should eat vanshlochan as much as possible with sugar candy and coconut. It overcomes weakness during pregnancy and keeps the child healthy and disease free.

Love, Wealth or Success?

- Unknown Author
Once three old men stood by a house and asked for food. The lady of the house invited them into her house to appease their hunger. To her surprise, they declined it saying that only one of them whom she chooses would enter the house. They further introduced themselves as 'Wealth', 'Success' and 'Love'. The amused lady replied that she would get back to them after discussing with her husband.

The lady returned back and invited 'Love' into her house. The old man who was 'Love' walked into the house surprisingly with 'Wealth' and 'Success' following him.
When the bemused lady enquired as to why the other two pursued 'Love,' the two others said that they normally followed love even without an invite if 'Love' was chosen. But also clarified, that had one of them instead of 'Love' had been chosen, invariably the other two would not have stepped in.
They said, "Where ever love goes, we also follow!”
It is only too natural for the inclusion of all goodness in one's life with the all embracing aspect of love blossoming from one's very being!

Love is the light that illumines one's life.

1. Your thumb is nearest you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a 'sweet duty.'

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our
little finger - the smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, 'The least shall be the greatest among you.' Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

>>>Story,Do's Don't, what to do - Surya Grahan >>>

Om Namo Narayana....

Story of Surya Grahan and Chandra Grahanam in Hindu Religion

Surya Grahan, solar eclipse, is widely mentioned in the Holy Scriptures of Hinduism. There is also an interesting myth regarding the occurrence of Surya Grahan. It happened during the Samdura Manthan (churning of ocean) episode in the Puranas. Rahu (Demon) and Mohini, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, are the main characters in the incident.

The Amrit (elixir) that was obtained from churning the ocean was cunningly stolen by Ausras (Demons). Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful damsel, to win back the Amrit. She achieved her mission by enamoring the Asuras, they fell for her beauty and handed over the Amrit to her.

Mohini returned to the Devas and started distributing it. Devas sat in a line and mohini gave a portion to each one of them. Rahu, an Asura, who found out that they were tricked took the form a Deva and sat in the line between Chandra (Moon God) and Surya (Sun God).

When Mohini approached Rahu, Chandra and Surya realized that Rahu was not one among them and soon identified him as an Asura. Mohini soon severed the head of Rahu which flew into the sky. Rahu's, depicted in the form of a Snake head occasionally, continued to live and decided to avenge Surya and Chandra.

Thus periodically Rahu engages in a war with Surya and Chandra. The Chandra Grahan (Lunar eclipse) and Surya Grahan (Solar eclipse) takes place when Rahu gobbles up Moon and Sun respectively. Surya and Chandra then fights to free themselves.

Dos and Don'ts of watching Solar Eclipse – Precautions while viewing Surya Grahan

The most important precaution to be taken during Solar Eclipse is not to watch the eclipse with naked eye. Watching the Eclipse with naked eye might cause permanent damage to the eye or blindness. The safest method of viewing a Total Solar Eclipse is by projection, in which a small opening is used to cast the image of the Sun on a screen beyond the opening.

Don'ts During Solar Eclipse

  • Never watch the eclipse with a naked eye.
  • Don't use Binoculars to view the eclipse.
  • Don't use Telescope to view the eclipse.
  • Don't use any cheap or easily available filters in Telescope or Binoculars to view the sun. Only specifically designed filters should be used with Telescope and Binoculars.
  • Don't watch the eclipse using color film.
  • Don't watch the eclipse with non-silver black and white film.
  • Don't watch the eclipse with medical x-ray films with images on them.
  • Don't use smoked glass to view the sun.
  • All developed films lack a silver emulsion and therefore it should not be used to view the eclipse.

Do's During Solar Eclipse

  • You should take the advice of an experienced person or a scientist before planning to view a Total Solar Eclipse
  • Only use specifically designed spectacles designed with filters to view the eclipse.
  • The safest method of viewing a Total Solar Eclipse is by projection, in which a small opening is used to cast the image of the Sun on a screen beyond the opening.
  • It is safe to view the total phase of an eclipse (when the moon completely coves the sun) with naked eye. But one needs to know when to stop and start viewing the total phase. So this is bit risky.

>>> Solar Eclipse(Solar Eclipse) in January 2010 >>>

Surya Grahan Fasting Time in January 2010 – How to fast and perform pujas during Solar Eclipse on January 15

The Annular Solar Eclipse, Surya Grahan, taking place on January 15, 2010 is an important religious event for several Hindu communities. Several Hindus fast during the grahan period – the fasting begins 12 hours before the beginning of the eclipse. The fasting or Vedarambha for this particular Grahan on January 15 begins at 21:22 hrs on January 14, 2010. (All dates and time are based on Indian Standard Time.)

The fasting is performed during Surya Grahan is based on the belief that due to the unique solar event cooked food and other such items on earth comes under the influence of the solar event and gets spoiled. The fast begins 12 or 9 hours prior to Grahan because when the actual eclipse begins the stomach will be empty.

All food items – solid and liquid- are covered with Darba grass during the period. (You can read more about it here.)

Some communities do not perform Shardh and Tarpan for dead relatives during the Grahan period – this based on the belief that the ancestors will be fasting during the period. But Shradh is performed during this period by certain Hindu communities who believe that their ancestors descended from Devas or Demi gods.

Taking snan or bath in Holy River or at home at the beginning of the Grahan and after the end of the Grahan is considered highly auspicious. (Why snan is taken during the period can be found here.)

Please note that these rituals are only performed by certain Hindu communities. Majority of Hindus do not fast during the period but those living near Holy Rivers take bath during the period.

Why do we Hindus take bath during Surya Grahan or Solar Eclipse in Holy Rivers?

Sun or Surya has been part of worship in Hinduism from time immemorial. The legend of the Surya Grahan, or Solar Eclipse, is traced to the Puranas and the famous incident of the Samudra Madana or Churning of ocean. Scriptures suggest that taking holy dip in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri and in teerthas like Brahma Sarover in Kurukshetra in Haryana will help in removing the stains of the Adharmic activities performed by people in this birth and previous births. It is seen as the best form of worship and ritual to attain Moksha – escape from cycle of birth and rebirth.

Another popular belief is that this rare and unique solar phenomenon – the alignment of sun, moon and earth – generates curative properties in holy waters of the rivers and ponds.

So we Hindus take bath during Grahan

  • To wash away the sins
  • To attain moksha
  • And due to the curative properties found in the water during the period

The Time to Take Bath during Grahan

Today, Hindus take bath during any period of the Grahan. Elders and scriptures suggest that the bath taken when the Surya Grahan starts (sparsha) and those taken when the grahana ends (moksha) is more auspicious and helpful.

Holy bath performed at the beginning of Solar Eclipse or Grahana gets result that is equal to performing 100,000 holy dips in various holy rivers and ponds. The holy dip performed after the end of solar eclipse or Moksha Nantara Snana gets one the result of performing uncountable Snans in holy rivers and teerthas.

Importance of taking holy dip at Brahma Sarover in Kurukshetra

The holy bath taken in the Brahma Sarover in Kurukshetra during eclipse is of even greater importance.

It is widely believed that to bath in the in Brahma Sarover in Kurukshetra is equal to performing the famous Ashwa Medha Yajna or Yagam mentioned in several Hindu scriptures. It is also said that all the holy waters in the rivers mentioned in the Hindu scriptures flow to the Brahma Sarover Tirth during solar eclipse. You can more read about Brahma Saravor Snan here.

But do all people taking Holy bath during Surya Grahan attain Moksha?

This doubt was once raised by Goddess Parvati to Lord Shiva. To find answer to the divine question the divine couple attended one such Mela.
