>>> Three Kernels of Corn >>>

Three Kernels of Corn
-Unknown Author-

Three young men were once given three kernels of corn apiece by a wise old sage, who admonished them to go out into the world, and use the corn to bring themselves good fortune. The first young man put his three kernels of corn into a bowl of hot broth and ate them.

The second thought, I can do better than that, and he planted his three kernels of corn. Within a few months, he had three stalks of corn. He took the ears of corn from the stalks, boiled them, and had enough corn for three meals.

The third man said to himself, I can do better than that!

He also planted his three kernels of corn, but when his three stalks of corn produced, he stripped one of the stalks and replanted all of the seeds in it, gave the second stalk of corn to a sweet maiden, and ate the third.

His one full stalk's worth of replanted corn kernels gave him 200 stalks of corn! And the kernels of these he continued to replant, setting aside only a bare minimum to eat. He eventually planted a hundred acres of corn. With his fortune, he not only won the hand of the sweet maiden but purchased the land owned by the sweet maiden's father.

And he never hungered again.

>>> Determination and Patience >>>

Determination and Patience

Determination is the strength that will enable you to pass the barrier of useless thoughts in order to create positive thoughts and to be successful in whatever you wish. It comes from within and its partner is patience. Patience teaches you not to push but rather to wait and appreciate the game of life instead, knowing that nothing remains the same, and everything will change at some point.

>>> Two Kind of Food >>>

Two Kind of Food

-Unknown Author

One day while travelling with a companion, Nanak took shelter in the house of a poor, low-caste Hindu carpenter named Lalo. He took a liking to Lalo and stayed with him for two weeks. Then he heard that people were gossiping. They said, "Nanak is a high-caste Hindu; why should he be staying with a low-caste man? It is not proper."

One day a wealthy landlord of the neighborhood decided to give a big feast and to invite all the four castes of Hindus -- brahmins, military, merchants and manual laborers. A brahmin friend of Guru Nanak came to him and told him about the feast. "You really must go," he said. But Nanak did not believe in castes, and considered all men equal. He did not like the idea, and said, "I do not belong to any of the four castes, so why invite me?" "Ah," said the brahmin, "now I see why people call you a 'heretic'. Malik, the landlord, will be very displeased with you if you refuse his invitation." And he walked away.

Nanak did not go to the feast, and, sure enough, afterwards Malik came and confronted him. "Why did you dishonor me by staying away?" "Well," replied Nanak, "I do not crave fine food. But if this offends you, then I will eat some of your food." But Malik was still not happy, and accused Nanak of ignoring his own caste and eating and staying with Lalo, a low-caste man.

"Then give me my share of elegant food from your banquet," said Nanak," and turning to Lalo he asked him to bring him something from his stock of simple food. When both foods were set before Guru Nanak, he took Lalo's coarse food in his right hand and Malik's fine food in his left, and squeezed them both. Lo and behold, from Lalo's food milk flowed out, and from Malik's, blood!

I've learned....

I've learned....
The best classroom in the world is at the feet of  an elderly person.

I've learned....
That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned....
That just one person saying to me, "You've made my  day!" makes my day.

I've learned....
That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful
feelings in the world.

I've learned....
That being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned....
That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned....
That I can always pray for someone when I don't  have the strength to
help him in some other way.

I've learned....
That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a
friend to act goofy with.

I've learned....
That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to
understand.

I've learned....
That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I
was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned....
Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the
faster it goes.

I've learned....
That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned....
That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned....
It's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned...
That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated
and loved .

I've learned....
That the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

I've learned....
That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned....
That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that
person continue to hurt you.

I've learned....
That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned....
That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself
with people smarter than I am.

I've learned....
That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned....
That there's nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling
their breath on your cheeks.

I've learned....
That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned....
That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned....
That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned....
That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned....
That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before
she passed away.

I've learned....
That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he
may have to eat them.

I've learned....
That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned....
That I can't choose how I feel but I can choose what I do about it.

I've learned....
That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his
little fist, that you're hooked for life.

I've learned....
That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness
and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned ...
That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is
requested and when it is a life threatening situation.

I've learned....
That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

>>> Should He Bite Me >>>

Should He Bite Me

- Unknown Author

One time a large stone fell upon Snake and covered her so that she could not rise. A white man, it is said, came upon her and lifted the stone, but when he had done so, she wanted to bite him. The White Man said, "Stop! Let us first go to someone wise." They went to Hyena, and the White Man asked him, "Is it right that Snake should want to bite me, even though I helped her so much?"

Hyena (who was looking for his own share of the White Man's body) said, "If you were bitten, what would it matter?" So Snake thought that settled it, but the White Man said again, "Wait a little, and let us go to other wise people, that I may hear whether this is right." They went and met Jackal, and the White Man put the same question to him.

Jackal replied, "I don't believe that Snake could ever be so covered by a stone that she could not rise. Unless I saw it with my two eyes, I wouldn't believe it. Take me to the place where you say it happened so I can see for myself whether it can possibly be true."

They went together to that place, and Jackal said, "Snake, lie down, and let yourself be covered." Snake did so, and the White man covered her with the stone; and although she tried with all her strength Snake couldn't get up. Then the White Man wanted to let Snake go again, but Jackal stopped him saying, "Don't life the stone. She wanted to bite you, therefore, let her get up and lift it herself."

Then they both went away and left Snake there, just as before.

Stone and the Flower

-Unknown Author

"You have hardened", said the flower, bending her petals downward toward the half stone at her roots. "These rains should have softened you, made you more fertile and receptive to the seeds of the fields; but no. You have accumulated minerals and have become more silent and full of calcium. Why do you stay here? Why do you resist the brook that gives us water?"

The stone said nothing.

A number of clouds passed by, the sun set and the night arrived with an immense bronze-coloured freckled moon with acne scars upon her worn face and in this manner reflected down upon the silent stone which still had not fallen asleep. The flower, by now, had tucked-in her petals and slept profoundly, and at this time the stone began to answer:

"I stay here because your roots have made me yours. I stay here because it is no longer about my feeling the earth rather because I have become part of that which functions as a support of your stem which resists the wind and the rain. Everything changes, my sweet flower", said the stone, "but I stay here because love is that microscopic space between your feet and my salted skin. You would only be able to feel it if destiny were ever to separate the two of us."

The moon followed the fade of the stars. Dawn gave a yawn as the sun began to burn its horizon on the lower lip of the mouth of a new day. The flower awoke and extended her beautiful petals. "Good morning", she said, "I dreamt that you were singing to me. How foolish of me, don't you think?"

The stone said nothing.

Killing Truth

-Unknown Author

One day Mara, who is the ancient Buddhist god of ignorance and evil, was travelling through the villages of India with his attendants. Along the way, he noticed a man doing a walking meditation. The man's face was lit up in wonder. Apparently, the man had just discovered something on the ground in front of him.

Mara's attendants, noticing the glow emanating from the man, asked Mara what it was the man had discovered. Mara replied, "He has discovered a piece of truth."

"But evil one!" exclaimed one of his entourage, "Doesn't this bother you when someone finds a piece of the truth?"

"No," said Mara. "I am not troubled in the least."

"But why not?"insisted his attendants.

"Because," replied Mara, chuckling, "Right after they discover some truth, they usually make a belief out of it."

Three Old Men
---Unknown Author

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards
Sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them.

Then she said, "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please
Come in and have something to eat."

"Is the man of the house home?" they asked.

"No," she said. "He's out."

"Then we cannot come in," they replied.

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened.

So, he said. "Go tell them I'm home, and invite them in!"

The woman went out and invited the men in.

"We do not go into a house together," they replied.

"Why is that?" she wanted to know.

One of the old men explained. "His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one
Of his friends, and pointing to another one he said, "This man is Success,
And I am Love." Then he added, "Now, go and discuss with your husband which
One of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said.

Her husband was overjoyed. "How nice!" he said. "Since that's the case, let
Us invite in Wealth. Let him come in and fill our home with wealth!"

His wife disagreed. "Why don't we invite Success?"

Their daughter was listening from the corner of the room. She jumped in with
Her own suggestion. "Wouldn't it be better to invite Love? Our home will
Then be filled with love!"

The wife agreed. "Then let us heed our daughter's advice," said the husband
To his wife. "Go out and invite Love in to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the three old men, "Which one of you is Love?
Please come in and be our guest."

Love got up and started walking toward the house. Then the other two also
Got up and followed him.

Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success, "I only invited in Love, as
You directed. Why are you all coming in?"

The old men replied together, "If you had invited only Wealth or Success,
The other two of us would have stayed. However, since you invited Love,
Wherever He goes, we go with him, because wherever there is Love, there is
Also Wealth and Success!"

>>> Sharing Happiness >>>

Sharing Happiness

-Unknown author

two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths, only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Real Meaning of Peace

-Unknown Author

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures.

But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.

The king chose the second picture.

Parable of the Spoons

-  Unknown Author

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like. "The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, "I don't understand." "It is simple" said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other. While the greedy think only of themselves."

>>> 45 Rules of Life >>>

45 RULES OF LIFE
Author Unknown

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer,
Cleveland , Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught
me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written.

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and
parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their
journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God
never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one
is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no
for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.
Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years,
will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time enough time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you
did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative (dying young).

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside, every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's,
we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

You cannot feel Me,
yet I am the power at work in your hands.

I am at work
though you do not understand My ways.

I am at work
though you do not recognize My works.

I am not strange visions,
I am not mysteries...
only in absolute stillness beyond self
can you know Me as I am
and then but as a feeling and a faith.

Yet, I am there.   Yet I hear.
Yet I answer.
When you need  Me, I am there.

Even if you deny Me, I am there.
Even when you feel most alone, I am there.
Even in your fears, I am there.
Even in your pain, I am there.

I am there when you pray
and when you do not pray.

I am in you
you are in Me.

I am the law
on which the movement of the stars
and the growth of living cells are founded.

I am the love
that is law's fulfilling.

I am assurance.

I am peace.

I am openness.

I am the law
that you live by.

I am the love
that you cling to.

I am your assurance.

I am your peace.

I am one with you.

Beloved , I am there.

>>> None Can Match Parents >>>

NONE CAN MATCH PARENTS
-Vasuki

An old man was sitting in the courtyard of his house along with his son who had received tertiary education. Suddenly a crow perched on a wall of the house.

The father asked the son: 'What is this?' The son replied: 'It is a crow.'

After a little while the father again asked the son: 'What is this?' The son said: 'It is a crow.' After a few minutes the father asked his son the third time: 'What is this?' The son said: 'Father, I have just now told you that this is a crow.'

After a little while the old father again asked his son the fourth time: 'What is this?' At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father with a rebuff, 'Father! It is a crow, a crow.'

A little after the father again asked his son: 'What is this?' This time the son replied to his father with a vein of temper. Father: 'You are always repeating the same question, although I have told you so many times that it is a crow. Are you not able to understand this?'

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary. Opening a page he asked his son to read that. When the son read it the following words were written in the diary: "Today my little son was sitting with me in the courtyard, when a crow came there. My son asked me twenty-five times what it was and I told him twenty-five times that it was a crow and I did not at all feel irritated. I rather felt affection for the innocent child."

The father then told the son the difference between a father and a son's attitude, 'While a little child he asked me this question twenty-five times and I felt no irritation in replying to the question twenty-five times and when today I asked him the same question only five times, he felt irritated and annoyed.'

Lesson: None can match the generosity of our parents

>>> Simple Way To Put a smile on somebody Else >>>

7 Ways To Put A Smile On Somebody Else's Face

1. Write an encouraging note to others that have encouraged you or that need encouragement. Handwritten notes that are given to encourage, not just for thanking someone for a gift, are rare. That makes handwritten notes even more special. Start a new practice of sitting down and writing an encouraging note on a regular basis. You just might start an epidemic!

2. Take a friend out to lunch or invite her to your home for a meal. You will get to know each other even better than you do right now. If you feel like being more adventurous, throw a party for several of your friends and put smiles on a multitude of faces.

3. Give someone an inspirational book to read. You will feel good doing it, reading the book will change the person, and they will think of you every time they read it.

4. Ask a friend or relative if you can take care of their kid(s) for a day or evening. If you have been a parent, you know the value of being able to have a few hours of `adult time` without worrying about the children. Don't wait to be asked to baby-sit when it is required. Offer to do it at a time when the parent can do something fun and relaxing.

5. Deliver a meal to someone you know that is sick or having a rough time. We have all been sick and know the last thing you want to do is be out of bed. There are also times when life is tough and it is hard to do all of the daily chores. You can be a tremendous help by providing a meal that can be enjoyed.

6. Volunteer time to supporting your local prayer hall or temple. Every minute you dedicate to charity or temple
will cause many smiles. You will put a smile on the face of each leader just for helping without being asked. You will also be putting smiles on the faces of those that are being helped through the organization.

7. Thank everyone that supports you throughout the day. The list of those that you come in contact with is endless. Remember family and friends, secretaries, co-workers, teachers, Sunday school teachers, pastors, store employees, janitors, gas station attendants, those that deliver your mail and newspaper, and servers at restaurants

REAL SHARING OF LIFE

He ordered one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink.

The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. She then carefully counted out the french fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of her husband.

He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and whispering.

You could tell they were thinking, "That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them."

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table.

He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said they were just fine - They were used to sharing everything.

The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite.

She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.

Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said, "No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything."

As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with his napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked

"What is it you are waiting for?"

She answered....

"The teeth.

>>> Masks >>>

Masks

-Unknown Author

Don't be fooled by the face I wear, for I wear a thousand masks, And none of them are me. Don't be fooled, for goodness sake, don't be fooled.

I give you the impression that I'm secure, that confidence is my name and coolness is my game, And that I need no one. But don't believe me. Beneath dwells the real me in confusion, in aloneness, in fear. That's why I create a mask to hide behind, to shield me from the glance that knows.

But such a glance is precisely my salvation. That is, if it's followed by acceptance, if it's followed by love. It's the only thing that can liberate me from my own self-built prison walls. I'm afraid that deep down I'm nothing and that I'm just no good, And that you will reject me.

And so begins the parade of masks. I idly chatter to you. I tell you everything that's really nothing and nothing of what's everything, of what's crying within me. Please listen carefully and try to hear what I'm not saying. I'd really like to be genuine and spontaneous, and me. But you've got to help me. You've got to hold out your hand.

Each time you're kind and gentle, and encouraging, Each time you try to understand because you really care, my heart begins to grow wings, feeble wings, but wings. With your sensitivity and sympathy, and your power of understanding, you alone can release me from my shallow world of uncertainty.

It will not be easy for you. The nearer you approach me, the blinder I may strike back. But I'm told that Love is stronger than strong walls, And in this lies my only hope. Please try to beat down these walls with firm hands, but gentle hands, for a child is very sensitive.

Who am I, you wonder...

I am every man you meet. I am every woman that you meet.

And I am also you.

On The Other Side

-Unknown Author

A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was leaving the room after paying a visit, and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side." Very quietly the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know?" the man said.

"You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?"

The doctor was holding the handle of the door, on the other side of which came a sound of scratching and whining. As he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear."

"I know little of what is on the other side of death," the doctor continued, "but I do know one thing: I know my Master is there, and that is enough. And when the door opens, I shall pass through with no fear, but with gladness.

>>>Stepping - Not 'Stopping stones >>>

STEPPING – NOT 'STOPPING' STONES
-Vasuki mahal

?ui=2&view=att&th=1271f23ab32022cc&attid=0.1&disp=attd&realattid=ii_1271f23ab32022cc&zw

There is a fable which says that God called his special angels and gave them seeds and told them to scatter them over the earth. The Evil One, hearing about the seeds, called his little special demons, and gave them dirt. He instructed them to go out and cover up the seeds to stop them from growing.

But the "obstacle" didn't work in the way the Evil One had planned. Instead, the dirt helped to grow into sturdy, healthy plants. They never would have been able to reach their full maturity without the dirt.

So it is with people. Our failures and disappointments can help us to grow. Our setbacks can make us reach higher; but only if we look at them with a positive viewpoint; only if we use the obstacles in our way as stepping stones, and not 'stopping' stones.

Adopting the positive view point does not mean ignoring the problems that confront you, and pretending that they do not exist. But it does mean facing them squarely and asking yourself, "What can I do about this?" And then going ahead and following constructive thought with constructive action.

The negative thinker, when presented with an obstacle or problem, let his mind become so filled with thoughts of self-pity that he has neither the incentive nor the energy to do anything to solve his problem. He is too busy trying to solve the riddle of Why did this happen to me? As long as he continues to try to figure that out he will be going in circles and digging a deeper negative rut for himself.

People who are successful have reached that success not because life was without its problems, but because they viewed those problems with the positive approach. Their problems helped them to grow into success, just as the dirt helped the seedlings to grow.

Several years ago, as a member of senior high school class, I visited the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan. The class was given a grand tour of the thriving company's buildings. I didn't know then about the positive spirit on which the company was founded.

Herbert Dow had discovered a way of obtaining potassium bromide from brine by using the electrolysis method. This discover had great potentialities, but it needed perfecting. The bromide made by this method had too many impurities. As a result, few sales were made, and the company failed financially. Within a short time, however, Dow formed another company, with the idea of perfecting his original discovery.

But one night an accident happened that proved to be the turning point for the company. An employee was supposed to be watching the kettles to see that the liquids in them did not overflow. However, when he learned that something was wrong in the engine room, he went to check, leaving the kettles unguarded. When he came back the liquid had boiled so long that there was only fused salts in the bottom of the kettles.

Mr. Dow, hearing this, could have fired the employee or become angry or wasted time in self-pity that this had happened to him. But he did none of these. Instead of berating the employee for the accident, he immediately asked about the results. What did the residue in the kettles show?

He checked samples from the kettles and found that they had the purity for which he had been searching through many experiments! His positive approach to difficult situation led him to success.

Such an open mindedness often leads to new opportunities. You will not be able to see the opportunities, of course, if you rivet your thoughts on the negative aspects of a situation. In worrying and complaining about a situation you don't like, you are using precious energy and time that could be used in finding a solution to the problem.

We have to work at being positive-minded. It is often a test of faith to look through a problem or situation, knowing that somewhere there is a solution, even though the appearance for the time being is to the contrary. It is also requires persistence, especially when you are in the company of negative thinkers and talkers. Not long ago a woman said to me, "Oh, I could keep my viewpoint lifted if I were around positive mined people. But this family of mine – honestly they're always talking down, and I catch it from them."

Thoughts are contagious. Other persons' thoughts and words can uplift or downgrade yours. It is well to be with positive minded persons as much as you can, but like the woman quoted above you may be frequently in the company of negative thinkers. What then?

You can learn to immunize yourself against negative mental contagion. Here again mental discipline must be practiced. You can deliberately attempt to keep your thoughts on the positive side; you can deliberately try to see the good of the situation, regardless of what the other person is thinking or saying.

Alphonse Karr has said, "Some people are always grumbling that roses have thorns. I am thankful that thorns have roses."

Try to make it a habit to be a positive thinker; Whether you are a positive or negative thinker is largely a matter of habit. It is the way you habitually see things, so why not try to see them in their best light?

The English writer Samuel Johnson wrote 200 years ago: "The habit of looking on the best side of every event is worth more than a thousand pounds a year."

You may not be able to become a positive thinker overnight, but you can work daily at the "becoming" and see improvement. Your faith in God and in good is your greatest bulwark against negativity.

As your faith becomes stronger and your mental discipline becomes greater, others' negation will have less and less affect you. Their gloomy words and views will no longer have the power to pull you down to their level. In fact, in many cases you will be able to draw them up into a higher level of thought and freshen the atmosphere.

I have a friend who is a master at this. She not only refuses to be drawn into a negative conversation but exerts her own exuberant personality and joy so that anyone who is with her is lifted up mentally and spiritually.

The positive minded person refuses to respond meekly to the negative. Instead of reacting passively to it, letting the problem or situation have the upper hand, he does the acting on it. He takes the initiative. He does something about it, either to improve or solve the problem.

Lydia O'Leary was born with a problem. She came into this world with a large red birthmark on her face. Surgery could not help her. For many years Miss O'Leary reacted negatively to this birthmark, and became immersed in an inferiority complex. But later, she began to act on the problem. She worked with a chemist to try to find a special cosmetic that would cover the mark. They eventually discovered and developed a preparation that completely covered birthmarks and other skin discolourations. the cosmetic could not be detected, not would it rub off.

This was Miss O'Leary's positive answer to her own problem. Her life was changed because of it. To help others who were afflicted with similar skin discoloration she began to manufacture her cosmetic.

She was requested by doctors to demonstrate her product in hospitals. Many war veterans and others found that her discovery was an answer to their own particular problem.

So often when a person reacts positively to his problems others are helped of benefited in some way. Lovers of Beethoven's music would never have had that to enjoy of Beethoven had reacted negatively to his deafness. He would not let deafness be the master and keep him from composing music. He was the master of the situation.

In June 1952, the play "Wish You Were Here" opened on Broadway. The critics were blunt about their lack of enthusiasm for it, and for the first month the play lost money.

This was a blow to its producer Joshua Logan, but he didn't sit and mope about it. He recognized the problem – the play did have low spots that, no doubt, had dampened the critics' views.

Then he acted to remedy the problem. He called the author Arthur Kober and the composer Harold Rome and the three of them worked out revisions, which improved the play greatly and made it a hit.

"It's never been done – remaking a play after the opening." Joshua Logan said, "but I decided to do it – and it worked."

The positive approach has "pulled many chestnuts out of the fire" and solved many problems. The negative approach has never accomplished anything, and had only caused headaches, ulcers, and general misery. The choice is yours as to which approach you will take.

If you choose the positive your home, your work, your entire environment will reflect a lighter, happier atmosphere. Your faith in life, your belief in the good, will enrich not only your own life but the lives of others.

>>>Eight Things about Failure >>>

EIGHT THINGS ABOUT FAILURE

1. TO FAIL IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING A FAILURE. One may have many failings and yet still be far from being a failure.

2. TO FAIL IS NOT THE DISGRACE EVERYONE THINKS IT IS. To err is to do nothing more than to join the human race.

3. FAILURE IS ONLY A TEMPORARY SETBACK. Failure is never the final chapter of the book of your life unless you give up and quit.

4. NOTHING WORTHWHILE IS EVER ACHIEVED WITHOUT RUNNING THE RISK OF FAILURE. The man who risks everything to try to achieve something truly worthwhile and fails is anything but a disgraceful failure.

5. FAILURE IS A NATURAL PREPARATION FOR, SUCCESS. Strange as it may seem to some of you, success is much more difficult to live with successfully than is failure.

6. EVERY FAILING BRINGS WITH IT THE POSSIBILITIES OF SOMETHING GREATER. Analyze failure under whatever circumstances you choose, and you will discover some seeds for turning failure into success,

7. WHAT YOU DO WITH FAILURES IN YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU. Failure is either a blessing or a curse, depending upon the individuals reaction or response to it.

8. FAILINGS ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN HOW TO DO THINGS BETTER THE NEXT TIME-TO LEARN WHERE THE PITFALLS ARE AND HOW TO AVOID THEM. The best possible thing to do with failure is to learn all you can from it.

>>> Keep Swimming >..

Keep Swimming !

Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl,
One was an optimistic soul;
But the other took the gloomy view,
"I shall drown," he cried, "and so will you."

So with a last despairing cry,
He closed his eyes and said, "Good-bye."
But the other frog, with a merry grin
Said, "I can't get out, but I won't give in!

I'll swim around till my strength is spent.
For having tried, I'll die content."
Bravely he swam until it would seem
His struggles began to churn the cream.

On the top of the butter at last he stopped
And out of the bowl he happily hopped.
What is the moral? It's easily found.
If you can't get out -- keep swimming around!

>>> Lizards Have Done It >>>

Lizards Have Done It

-Unknown Author

In Japan, a man breaks open the wall to renovate his house. Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls, and when when tearing down the walls, he found that there was a lizard stuck there because a nail from outside had been hammered into one of its feet. The man sees this, feels pity, and at the same time is curious because upon checking the nail he realized it had been there since the house was built ten years ago.

What happened?

The lizard had survived in that position for ten years! In a dark wall partition for 10 years without moving, the man found this to be impossible and mind boggling. Then he wondered how this lizard survived for ten years without moving a single step--since its foot was nailed!

So the man stopped his work and observed the lizard, what it had been doing, and what and how it has been eating. Later, not knowing from where it came, appeared another lizard... with food in its mouth.

>>> Life as a Jewel >>>

Life is a jewel
-Author Unknown

One afternoon Guru Nanak and his company were resting on the banks of the Ganges at Patna. Mardana was idly inspecting a stone he had picked up along the road, thinking of the vast throngs who had come to hear the Guru. "Master," said Mardana, "you teach a way for every person to find liberation. But many of those who listen still seem to spend much of their time in conflict, and in seeking out excitement and other idle pursuits. Why do they waste away their lives so?"

"Most people don't recognize its value," replied the Guru, "although human life is the dearest treasure on this earth."

"Surly everyone can see the value of life," said Mardana.

"No," said Nanak. "Each man places his own value on things according to what he thinks. A different man with different knowledge will place a different value. That stone you found in the dirt will make a good example. Take it to the marketplace and see what you can get for it."

Puzzled, Mardana took the stone to the marketplace and at a stall that sold sweets asked what the vendor would trade for it. The man laughed. "Go away, you're wasting my time."

He next tried a produce seller. "I have paying customers to wait on," said the grocer. "I'll give you an onion for it just to get you out of here."

Mardana tried several more shops with no better response. Finally he came to the shop of Salis Raj, the jeweler. Salis Raj's eyes opened wide when he saw the stone. "I'm sorry," he said, "I don't have enough money to buy your gem. But I will give you a hundred rupees if you will let me look at it a while longer."

Mardana hurried back to the Guru to tell him what had happened.

"See," said Guru Nanak, "how when we are ignorant we mistake a valuable gem for a worthless stone. If someone had told you its value before you knew what it was, you would have thought they were crazy. Such a jewel is human life, and whatever you've traded for it, that is what is yours."

Special Valentine Wish

I'd like to hang a valentine
Upon the world's front door...
With hearts of love and peace entwined
To last forevermore.

With love to guide our daily path,
There'd be no one in need;
God's blessings would be shared by all
Of every race and creed.

Peace would come to all the world
As nations great and small,
Would put aside their selfish aims
To work for the good of all.

If I could have my wish today,
I'd wish for nothing more
Than to hang a great big valentine
Upon our world's front door.

Happy Valentines Everyone!

Valentine Prayer
(Author Unknown)
I said a Valentine prayer for you
and asked the Lord above
to fill your heart and bless your soul
With the precious gift of love.
I asked Him for sincere love
The kind that's meant to stay
Just like the generous love
You give to those you touch each day.
I prayed for love from family
And from every cherished friend
Then I asked the God to give you
His love that knows no end.

>>> God Reason >>>

God's Reason

I don't know how to say it
But somehow it seems to me
That maybe we are stationed,
Where God wants us to be.

That little place we're filling
Is the reason for our birth
And just to do the work we do
He sent us down earth.

If God had wanted otherwise
I'd reckon He'd have made
Each one of us a little different
Of a worse or better grade.

And since God knows and understand
All things of land and sea
I fancy that He placed us here
Just where He wanted us to be.

Sometimes we get to thinking
As our labors we review
That we should like a higher place
With greater things to do.

But we come to the conclusion
When the envying is stilled~
That the post to which God has sent us
Is the post He wanted filled.

And there isn't any service
That we honestly can scorn~
For it may just be the reason
God allowed us to be born.

>>> Simple Things >>>

Simple Things

-Unknown Author

A man comes to a master to ask how much man is independent, free. Is he totally free, or is there a limitation? Is there something like fate, destiny, a God who makes a limitation beyond which you cannot be free?

The mystic answered in his own way - not logically but existentially. He said, "Stand up."

The man must have felt this was a stupid kind of answer, "I am asking a simple question and he is asking me to stand up." But he said, "Let us see what happens." He stood. And the mystic said, "Now, raise one of your legs up."

The man, by this time must have been thinking he had come to a madman; what has this to do with freedom, independence? But now that he has come... and there must have been a crowd of disciples, and the mystic was so respected; not to follow him would be disrespectful, and there was no harm. So he lifted one of his legs from the earth, so one foot was in the air and he was standing on one foot.

And then the master said, "That's perfectly good. Just one thing more. Now take the other foot up also."

"That is impossible!" the man said, "You are asking something impossible. I have taken my right foot up. Now I cannot take my left foot up."

The master said, "But you were free. In the beginning you could have taken the left foot up. There was no binding order. You were completely free to choose whether to take the left foot up or the right foot up. I had not said anything about it; you just decided. You took the right foot up.

In your very decision, you made it impossible for the left foot to be lifted up. Don't bother about fate, God. Just think of simple things."

>>>Before You Can Dry Another's Tears - You Too Must Weep !

Before You Can Dry Another's Tears - You Too Must Weep !

- Unknown Author

Let me not live a life that's free
From "THE THINGS" that draw me close to
THEE-
For how can I ever hope to heal
The wounds of others I do not feel -
If my eyes are dry and I never weep -
How do I know when the hurt is deep -
If my heart is cold and it never bleeds,
How can I tell what my brother needs -
For when my ears are deaf to the beggar's plea
And we close our eyes and refuse to see,
And we steel our hearts and harden our mind,
And we count it a weakness whenever we're kind,
We are no longer following THE FATHER'S WAY
Or seeking His guidance from day to day -
For, without "crosses to carry" and "burdens to
Bear,"
We dance through a life that is frothy and fair,
And "chasing the rainbow" we have no desire
For "roads that are rough" and "realms that are
Higher"-
So spare me no heartache or sorrow, dear Lord,
For the heart that is hurt reaps the richest reward,
And God enters the heart that is broken with sorrow
As He opens the door to a BRIGHTER
TOMORROW,
For only through tears can we recognize
The suffering that lies in another's eyes.
